WRL Sealed Grain Shed “the best value option” and “the ideal long-term choice”
For Forbes grower Phil Scott, the decision to move to sealed grain shed storage wasn’t a difficult one. After a disastrous combination of mice, wet conditions and silo bags – Phil rang WRL Engineering in the morning and had pencilled the build in by the afternoon.
“It sounds a bit spur of the moment, but it really wasn’t,” Phil explained. “We had a problem and we needed a fast solution that would work for us.
“We looked at sealed silos. We weren’t even looking at sheds. Then I spoke to a mate who suggested WRL Engineering’s sheds. When we worked it out dollars per tonne, the sheds kept coming out as the best value option.
“It also made real sense to go with the WRL shed because of the multipurpose value. When you don’t have grain in it – you can use it for fertilizer, hay, or even machinery.”

Phil farms wheat and canola between Forbes and Grenfell in Central West NSW. While canola is typically delivered at harvest, wheat is stored on-farm and marketed throughout the year - making reliable storage critical.
The first WRL shed was a 5,400 tonne, 18 x 72m multipurpose fully sealed grain shed which was completed in 2021 just prior to harvest. The second shed was completed in 2025 and was the 8,280 tonne, 24 x 72m facility. Both sheds featured the optional concrete apron, roof inlets for easy in-loading, and were fully sealed for fumigation.
“I’d say it took three weeks to get the second shed up,” Phil outlined. “We were lucky because we had a good site with no real restrictions and the full team here. WRL know how to get the job done. They were great to deal with from the beginning. When we needed more storage, it wasn’t even a decision.
“Going with a sealed grain shed was the ideal long-term choice for us. The key thing was – sheds give us more options. More options, convenience and speed at harvest. More options with marketing our grain. More control over the entire process.
“The WRL sheds have made harvest a lot easier. They are definitely easier to use, higher capacity, easy to fill and unload. Sealed sheds have lifted our capacity overall and given us options around the clock when we need them. You aren’t paying warehousing costs or in and out costs. You don’t need as many trucks at harvest.
“It all adds up and it’s not hard to make up the costs quickly. The sheds end up paying for themselves for sure. The best thing at the end of the day is when you’ve got your grain in there – you can close the door and know it’s safe.”
